Move over cupcakes; this year’s trendiest dessert is pie! Hot, flakey crusts filled with mouth-watering fruit or rich, creamy custards; there’s nothing more American than pie. If you want to sample this iconic American dessert in all its varied glory, the place to be is the Caribe Royale Hotel and Convention Center in Celebration Florida near Orlando where the 17th annual APC Crisco National Pie Championships will be held April 8 to 10. Celebration is located just southwest of Orlando down US 4, an easy drive from your Orlando vacation rental.
Since 1995, the annual pie competition has drawn amateur bakers, professional pastry chefs, independent bakeries and commercial pie companies from across the U.S. and Canada. An onsite pie bake-off for amateur contestants will be held Friday with professionals squaring off on Saturday. A special bake-off for high school students will also be held Saturday. Winners will be announced Sunday during the Great American Pie Festival.
The two-day Great American Pie Festival from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 9 and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 10 is well worth the drive from your Orlando vacation rental. Baking and pie decorating demonstrations will be offered throughout both days of the festival, along with pie-scaping, pie tin art and a pie eating contest. Children can make their own pies at the Kids Creation Station. Bring your camera.
